On July 19, 2010, the European Commission opened a two-day conference to debate the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and to discuss the results of the related public consultation. These results clearly show that the public gives high priority to sustainable resource use, supply of healthy food, and the maintenance of diverse farming systems throughout the EU. Germany: Increase in organic area and operators in 2009

(05/07/2010) The German Ministry of Agriculture recently released the latest (2009) figures on organic agriculture in the country. According to the ministry, 947'115 hectares of organic agricultural land were under organic management in 2009. Germany therefore holds third place in Europe after Spain and Italy for agricultural land under organic management.There were 21'047organic farms constituting 5.6 percent of all farms in the country. >> More information

 

The Netherlands: Increase of organic land and of organic sales in 2009

Spain: Strong increase of organic land in 2009

(May 26, 2010) Recently the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture MARM released the 2009 data for organic agriculture in the country. According to these figures, there are 1.3 million hectares of organic agricultural land and in addition 0.27 million hectares are wild collection areas. Estonia: More than ten percent organic agricultural land in 2009

(March 29, 2010). Recently a broshure was published about organic farming in Estonia. It informs extensively about the current situation.
In Estonia, organic land has expanded more than ten times since 2000. In 2009, 102'767 hectares were managed organically - 18 percent more than in 2008. By 2009, the organic land constituted more than ten percent of all agricultural land in use, and there were 1277 organic producers. One of the reasons for this growth is the financial support since the year 2000. >> More information

 

Switzerland: Market grows by seven percent in 2009

New statistics report from Eurostat shows: Organic area up by 21 percent in the EU between 2005 and 2008

(March 3, 2010) According to a new report released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, organic farming in the 27 countries of the European Union covered almost eight million hectares in 2008, up by seven percent compared with 2007. In 2008, the five member states with the largest organic area in the European Union were Spain, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom and France.

Between 2007 and 2008, the total organic area increased in all member states for which data are available, except Italy (- 13 %). The highest increases were recorded in Spain (+ 33 %), Bulgaria (+ 22 %) and Slovakia (+ 19 %).

35 Million Hectares of Organic Agricultural Land World-wide

(February 16, 2009) 35 million hectares of agricultural land are certified according to organic standards (data as at the end of 2008). “Compared to the 2007 data, almost three million hectares more were reported,” says Helga Willer of FiBL.“ Growth was strongest in Latin America and Europe.” There are almost 1.4 million organic producers. >> More information
