European Commission, DG Agri, Organic Unit

The task of the Organic Unit (Unit F.5 Quality policy: Organic Farming) at the DG Agri is to develop the Community policy on organic food and farming. The unit was set up July 1, 2005.

The objectives in fulfilling the mission are to ensure

• The protection of organic agricultural products by timely managing and developing the respective Community legal basis;

• The timely implementing the European Action Plan on Organic Farming and Food as regards actions relating to this legal framework, including developing trade in organic products in particular from developing third countries;

• The effective monitoring of a timely implementing the European Action Plan on Organic Farming and Food as regards actions outside this Units competence;

• The appropriate uptake of organic farming in rural development programmes when approved by the Commission.
