"Organic viticulture and wine-making: development of environment and consumer friendly technologies for organic wine quality improvement and scientifically based legislative framework (ORWINE)" is a European funded research project which aims at providing a scientific
background for the development of the EU legislative framework and
a code of best practices for organic wine production and labelling.
Private standards for "processing, packaging and preserving
wines from organic agriculture" have been developed in some EU
member countries since the 1980's. The content of such standards is
widely discussed at a national and EU level, is not always consensual.
Private standards are applied in most of the European wine producing
countries, mostly supported by certifiers or producer organizations.
Nevertheless, a specific European regulation on organic wine would
give a great impulse to this market segment.
The consortium includes research centers, organic producer associations
and the IFOAM EU group.
The ORWINE project is characterized by a significant stakeholder
involvement: organic wine producers, as well as traders, consumers,
experts and policy makers will be asked for their opinion and advises
in several steps.
All project results will be posted at the web site www.orwine.org
(still under construction) and disseminated through the specialized
press.
