The
International Organic Accreditation Service (IOAS) will hold its first
3-day course on evaluation of organic certification bodies will take
place on November 30 - December 2, 2005 at the Research Institute of
Organic Agriculture (FiBL), Frick, Switzerland. Deadline for applications
is October 14, 2005.
Participants will gain an understanding of the operation of inspection
and certification bodies involved in organic agriculture and the regulatory
environment in which they work and learn and practice the approaches
and skills required.

November 30, 2005: Symposium "Organic Cotton - combining consumer's
concern and poverty reduction" in Switzerland
Swiss
association for international cooperation, Helvetas, and the Research
Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) will hold a symposium on organic
cotton production and trade promotion. This one-day-symposium takes
place the 30th November at the Culture and Convention Centre Lucerne,
Switzerland.
The main objective of the symposium will be to present the lessons
learnt within the success story of various Swiss organic cotton projects
to a national and international audience interested in the topic. Furthermore,
it will be an excellent opportunity to exchange and discuss insights
gained while setting up and managing an integrated value chain, in particular
the experiences made with the multi stakeholder approach.

November 10 - 11, 2005: 2nd Seminar of the
Project European information Systems for Organic Markets in Brussels
The
second seminar of the project European Information System for Organic
Farming (EISfOM) took place November 10 and 11 2005 in Brussels, titled
„A Framework for a European Information System for Organic Markets”.
The aim was to consult with national an international agencies and stakeholders
so that full support of the EISFOM proposals could be achieved.
Speakers included representatives from the European Commission's General
Directorates Agriculture and Research, of Eurostat, of national statistical
offices and agricultural ministries, of certifyers and other stakeholders.
Research partners of the EISFOM Project presented and discussed project
results and recommendations, covering the following areas of data collection:
production; farm incomes (FADN); prices; consumption; supply balances
and international trade.
The seminar prepared the definition of a framework for a European Information
System for Organic Markets. The discussions at the seminar were based
on the recommendations of the EISFOM project.

on Organic Agriculture in the Mediterranean, Chania, Crete, Greece
The National Agricultural Research Foundation
– Institute for Olive Trees and Subtropical Plants of Chania - undertook
the initiative for organizing an International Symposium on “Organic
Agriculture in the Mediterranean – Problems and Perspectives” that will
be held at Chania on November 9-11, 2005 and will include the following
topics:
- Present situation of organic agriculture in the Mediterranean (country
reports)
- Research advances related to organic agriculture
- Scientific reports on socio-economic aspects of organic agriculture

November 3-5, 2005: 1st International Conference on Organic Citrus
Fruit Farming, in Valencia, Spain
In
November 2005 the first international on organic citrus growing will
take place in Valencia, Spain. It is organised by the Seminari d'Agricultura
Ecológica (SAE-CV), the Spanish Society of Organic Agriculture
SEAE in cooperation with the IFOAM Regional Groups European Union and
Mediterranean Countries (ABIM) and many other groups.
The major part of organic citrus fruit is grown in Italy, and it is
expected that the area and importance will increase substantially in
the next years. At this conference stakeholders will discuss research
results, experiences and knowledge and analyse the current situation

13, 2005: “Evaluating inputs for organic farming – a new system”, Brussels
A
public conference of the Organic Inputs Project was held October 13,
2005 in Brussels..
At the conference, the consortium of the Organic Inputs Evaluation
project presented the conclusions its work, seeking feedback from interested
stakeholders. Conference participants will be feeding into the last
stage of the project, as the final recommendations to the European Commission
are drawn.
In September 2005 the proposals of the Organic Inputs Evaluation project,
to be discussed at the conference, were published. The project consortium
suggests new structures and procedures for the evaluation of inputs,
changes in Article 7 of Regulation 2092/91 EEC and a criteria matrix
for the evaluation of products. In a case study, the criteria matrix
has been tested with two products, hydrolyzed animal proteins and spinosad.
The proposals are contained in four documents:
- Proposed Criteria for Evaluation of Plant Protection Products,
Fertilizers and Soil Conditioners Used in Organic Agriculture;
- Proposed Criteria Matrix;
- Case study: Hydrolyzed Animal Proteins;
- Case study: Spinosad.

on Organic Agriculture "Researching Sustainable Systems" in
Adelaide, Australia
The International Scientific Conference on Organic Agriculture
Researching Sustainable Systems was coordinated by the International
Society of Organic Agriculture Research (ISOFAR) in co-operation with
the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM)
and the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia (NASAA).
The conference was a main module of the 15th IFOAM Organic World Congres.
The conference was held in Adeledaide, Australia, 21 - 23 September
2005.

Farming Advisers
August
28 and 29, 2005 a first meeting of European organic farming advisors
took place in Denmark, with participants from many European countries.
The aim of the meeting was to start a European network of organic farming
advisers. The inititative has been taken by the Danish Agricultural
Advisory Service, Department of Organic Farming, inspired by the European
integrated research project QLIF (QualityLowInput-Food) where networking
with advisers is an important part of the dissemination strategy.

IFOAM AgriBioMediterraneo International Conference on Soil Fertility
and Diversity in Mediterranean Agroecosystems and the 4th IFOAM AgriBioMediterraneo
(ABM) General Assembly, to be held in Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia from
14th -16th April 2005. The hosts and organizers of both events are jointly
the associations Eko Agro Ohrid, Macedonia & Eko Liburnia, Croatia
