September 28 and 29, 2006
International meeting on the use of organic seeds in vegetable production in the Netherlands

In the European countries the experience of many growers shows an inconsistent implementation of the organic seed legislation and possibilities for derogation, especially concerning vegetable varieties. Differences concerning the interpretation of implementation of the European organic farming regulation concerning seeds between countries might lead to unfair competition among growers, for instance on export markets.

At the joint meeting September 28 and 29, 2006 for growers, scientists, advisors and representatives from the official bodies/departments administering the rules in the individual countries compliance with the rules in the individual European countries, will be discussed.

The meeting is jointly organised by the European Consortium for Organic Plant Breeding (ECO-PB), the Advisory Service Denmark and the EU-funded Organic Revision project.

The meeting takes place at Bejo Zaden, Trambaan 1, 1749 CZ Warmenhuizen
in the Netherlands.

September 18 to 20, 2006: What will Organic Farming deliver? COR 2006, in Edinburgh, UK

This conference is organised by the Association of Applied Biologists in conjunction with COR - the Colloquium of Organic Researchers.

Organic farming systems are increasingly recognised throughout the world as a realistic alternative to intensive industrial agriculture. Consequently there is also an increasing amount of research activity both formal and informal linked to the study of organic farming systems. This biennial conference aims to provide a forum where approaches to, and unresolved issues arising from research in organic farming systems can be aired and new thinking enabled.

The themes identified for the main platform sessions are consequently broad; the widest possible interpretation should be made about topics suitable within each of the following themes: Health, Profit, better environments.

The deadline for call for papers is 3rd February 2006.

May, 3 to 4, 2006: 1st IFOAM Conference on Organic Wild Production in Bosnia and Herzegovina

“Wild harvested production” as a concept is very broad, and also encompasses commodities used for fibrous or industrial production.

There is significant trade in “organic” wild products, including products for direct consumption, such as berries, mushrooms and a wide variety of herbs. There is also a growing interest in organic wild products by the body care medicinal herb sectors. Statistics for this type of production are vague, and parallel to the “organic” market, other concepts such as the Non-Timber Forest Product scheme of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and other company-specific schemes have been developed.

This conference will focus on the harvesting of wild vegetable products from forest, “natural” lands, pastures and uncultivated land in the agriculture landscape. It will concentrate on current production that enters the organic market stream, but will also extend to other concepts, such as Fair Trade, sustainable forest management certification and Good Manufacturing Practices.

Target groups:

  • Producers of wild plants
  • Communities involved in collection of wild harvested products
  • Processors of wild plants
  • Buyers and users of wild plants
  • Developers of standards and certification systems for wild plants and their collection
  • Governmental or intergovernmental organizations involved in the sector
  • Service providers to any of these groups (consultants, researchers etc.)
