Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda for Organic Food and Farming

Strategic Research Agenda of TP Organics

On 13 February, 2015, the European Technology Platform for organic Food and Farming TP Organics (www.tporganics.eu) launched its new Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda at the BIOFACH Science Day. This document describes the research and innovation priorities of the European organic sector until 2020. Solving these challenges will be crucial to drive the development of the sector and strengthen its competitiveness. The new Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda will be used to influence funding priorities of EU and national research programmes.

The Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda is structured in four main chapters:

  • specific research and innovation needs related to the organic regulation
  • empowerment of rural areas: diversified local economies and improved livelihoods
  • eco-functional intensification: productivity, stability and resilience of agro-ecosystems
  • food for health and well-being: food quality, healthy diets and quality of life

The document demonstrates that increased research investment for the organic sector has much to offer, not only in terms of designing more sustainable production systems, but also for the design of new and resilient business models. TP Organics therefore demands that at least 10% of the Horizon 2020 research budget for agriculture and food production (Societal Challenge 2) be dedicated to the organic sector.

After the launch of the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, speakers from the European Commission and the Enterpise Europe Network gave an overview of the instruments available in Horizon 2020 and Rural Development to fund research in the organic sector. Special attention was paid to the SME instrument. All presentations are available below.
