The development of the European and the European Union’s (EU) organic sector in 2015 was characterised by two trend as shown by the annual FiBL survey on organic agriculture worldwide.

On the one hand, the market grew at an even higher rate than in the previous years. In fact, 2015 was the first year after the financial crisis in 2008 that showed a double-digit growth rate (13 percent in Europe; 12.6 percent in the EU).

On the other hand, the growth of the organic farmland continued to be slower than that of the market, but it was considerably faster than in the previous years, increasing by 8.2 percent in Europe and 7.8 percent in the EU.

The trend of the market growing at a faster rate than the area has been noticed for a couple of years, showing that production is not keeping pace with the demand of the market.
